The Butler group is developing Mn(III and IV) and Cu(II) complexes to facilitate the oxidative deconstruction of lignin, organosolv lignin, and other lignin model compounds. They are pursuing a biomimetic approach, taking cues from the oxidative pathways evolved by microbes to cleave 1,4 glycosidic linkages, producing discrete aromatic compounds.
